The arrival of wán̓ái (herring) marks a new year for the Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) people. The herring spawn is the beginning of our seasonal harvest cycle. It is a time of joy, celebration, and renewal all up and down the coast. Haíɫgḷíɫtis h̓sṇx̌su means Happy New Year in the Haíɫzaqvḷa (heiltsuk language).
Wán̓ái are culturally significant species to the Haíɫzaqv. Our culture is dependent on these small beings who give us a great gift every year. The Haíɫzaqv protect the herring and their habitat because we need them. It is an interdependent relationship that is at least 14,000 years old.
